Character History and Personality:

[This history section covers Jason's life up to his entry into [info]doors.]

All Jason Todd wanted was to do right, and to make proud the one person who had always had faith in him.

He was a good Robin - not as acrobatic as Dick Grayson before him, but with a passion for the fight that stemmed from the same anger that would have driven him to a criminal's life, had Bruce not taken him on. As it was, Jason already had a number of priors under his belt when Batman found him taking the wheels off the Batmobile down in Crime Alley, and it was with that sort of brash confidence that he threw himself into the role of Robin. He relished the opportunity to do good in the city that had taken his parents from him, and the affection and pride of his mentor. Bruce believed there was good in him when no one else would have, though they had their disagreements. Jason's anger never really went away, no matter how long he fought alongside Batman. He only grudgingly accepted his mentor's teachings on non-lethal methods, particularly as Jason grew older. Truthfully, he followed these edicts more because he wanted Bruce to be proud of him than because they believed him. He never did really understand why the scum always had to live, and this dissatisfaction surfaced in occasional fits of unnecessary force.

Of course, all that should have ended rather definitively when Jason died. They were in Europe tracking down Ra's Al Ghul when they ran across the Joker, seemingly by chance. While Batman was held back by one of his henchmen, the Joker incapacitated Jason, and took him to a remote warehouse. They were alone there together for what seemed to Jason like a very long time, and the Joker made the most of it. He beat Jason to the edge of death with a crowbar, stopping every once in a while to let him recover and regain consciousness. Then he'd beat him again.

Jason took the punishment, defiant to the last, always assuming that Bruce would appear at any moment, like always. He'd feel stupid, needing to be rescued, but he'd would come. He always came.

Even after the Joker had left, and Jason had dragged himself across the floor to the door with his bound hands, he still thought Bruce would come. He couldn't walk, couldn't run to escape, his shattered legs incapable of supporting his weight. The door, when he reached it after long minutes of excruciating agony, was locked. His mouth full of blood, one eye swollen shut, Jason watched the explosives the Joker had left behind count down, and realized that Bruce wasn't going to save him. He waited for death with a kind of resignation, but one thing comforted him. This would be it. Bruce would never let this pass without avenging him. The Joker would never hurt anyone else.

By the time Batman arrived, the building had exploded, and Jason was dead. The Joker, though, lived on. And, eventually, so did Jason.

Jason doesn't believe that his resurrecting contact with the Lazarus Pit somehow drove him over the edge. It was death that changed him, and more, it was learning that Batman had let the Joker keep wandering the Earth, killing and maiming and torturing. There had been no vengeance. Bruce had cared more about his ideals than he did about him, that was what fixed the new Jason into being. After he'd fled Ra's and his Pit, after he'd recovered from the fall from his castle, he began to train. If Bruce wasn't willing to be the Batman that Gotham needed, then Jason would give it the hero it ought to have.

Five years later, Jason donned the alias of the Red Hood, and set about consolidating Gotham's gangs. He put in motion a plan to get the Joker out of Arkham and into the open. He knew that it was only a matter of time before Batman came after him.

When Jason confronted him at last, back in Crime Alley where they'd met, with a choice between killing him, or killing the Joker, he really thought that the ultimatum might finally prove what he'd always hoped. It was a very small hope, buried by rage beyond measure that had warped even his best memories, but, stupidly, he actually thought for a second that Bruce would show he cared enough about his death to choose him, and to kill the Joker. Instead, Bruce choose neither one of them, and that was as good as choosing the man who'd killed Jason over him. Jason fled the ensuing explosion, and his heart turned harder than it had ever been. He would no longer bother with Batman, except as an impediment between him and a cleaner, better Gotham.

Of course, then Jason found himself trapped in someone else's head. He doesn't know why this has been his fate, but he could have had it worse, of course. At least Jack seems devoted to the idea of making things better in the world through use of force, but his scope is decidedly smaller and less violent than Jason would like. He knows what Jack is capable of. From here on out, it will just be a battle of wills to see whose methods blend with whose.

[[info]rooms Update]

As is the way of life, some things have improved, and some have not. He stopped killing some time ago and has remained true to that mandate, so far as anyone knows. He befriended Damian Wayne, only for Damian to die some months ago, charred alive by Firebug. He met and grew close to Kara Zor'El, even if she is a little out of touch with the whole 'humanity' thing, and she does disappear for weeks on end from time to time. Nothing is perfect. There has been grief, and loss, and he even managed to die a second time. He seems to be clinging on despite the effects of another dip in the Lazarus Pit, but no one can see what the long term might bring.

The Batfamily has come together and broken apart repeatedly over the last few years, and Jason has often felt like an outsider to it, out of the loop and without strong connections after Damian's death. But his life is wholly his own, now, in a way it hasn't been in a long time. Maybe now things can be different. He's always been an outsider, and hardly thinks of himself as part of Bruce's happy brood. But seeing them splinter has been difficult to watch. He sequesters himself in the house he protects down in the Narrows, a house full of homeless children with nowhere else to go, because no child should have nowhere to go. He does what he can to clean up the streets at night. He seeks order, and purpose, and meaning. These things have not changed.

Journal/Key: The journal is bound in rust red leather. The key is a skeleton key that once opened many of the doors in Wayne manor, but it has clearly seen better days. Made of dark, tarnished silver, with simple teeth at the end, the head of the key has been deeply scarred with a sharp object, obscuring a letter that was once printed there.
